Solar-powered transfer as part of the water system

A solar-powered transfer pump can move water between storage features where a conventional electrical supply is impractical or where a site-specific renewable arrangement suits the operating requirement. The design still depends on the hydraulic duty and the amount of energy available at the site.

JK Irrigation considers the source and receiving levels, lift, pipe length and diameter, required transfer volume, pump duty, controls, protection, panel orientation, shading, access and maintenance requirements together.

Mill Green Golf Club

JK Irrigation designed, selected and installed a solar-powered system to transfer water from one lake to another at Mill Green Golf Club. The lakes are separated by a significant route across the site. The solar panels were positioned in a wooded location away from normal lines of play, with their orientation to available sunlight considered during installation.

The approved project image shows the installed panel array. This record does not state an unverified pump model, pipe length, duty or measured transfer volume.

Billingbear Park

At Billingbear Park, JK Irrigation designed and constructed another solar-powered lake-to-lake transfer arrangement. The installation included a custom frame built for the solar panels on the pump-house roof.

This project is separate from the club's wider irrigation-system, pump-set and mole-plough work. The final project record will keep those packages distinct while showing how they connect within the water infrastructure.

Design questions for a solar transfer

  • How much water needs to be moved and over what period?
  • What are the static lift, route length and pipe restrictions?
  • How do source and receiving levels change?
  • What protection is required for the pump and controls?
  • Where can panels receive useful light without conflicting with play or maintenance?
  • How will the system be isolated, inspected and maintained?

No general performance or energy-saving figure is applied across these projects. Each duty and control arrangement needs to be verified for its own site.
