Good irrigation projects are built around a clear sequence: understand the site, define the requirement, plan the delivery and leave the operator with useful information. This protects the course programme and gives everyone a better basis for decisions.
1. Understand the starting point
Survey information, water arrangements, existing services, access, ground conditions and the operating timetable all influence a sensible scope. Early conversations should deal with the project as a whole rather than individual components in isolation.
2. Define the outcome
The brief should identify the areas to be served, intended improvements, water and power constraints, anticipated phasing and the records required at handover. Where information is incomplete, that should be investigated rather than assumed.
3. Plan delivery around the site
Working windows, ground reinstatement, access routes, other contractors and seasonal play all need to be coordinated. A phased approach can be appropriate where it gives the site continuity and control.
4. Commission and hand over properly
Testing, controller setup, operator familiarisation and clear records turn an installed system into usable infrastructure. The handover should leave the site better equipped to operate, maintain and develop the asset.
